The National Weather Service is now indicating that the storm that was predicted for Tuesday has weakened and will now arrive on Wednesday. No evacuations from this storm are necessary. The Santa Barbara County Office of Emergency Management and cooperating emergency response agencies will continue monitor the weather system for changes and will alert the public if the storm gets stronger. –Since the beginning of the current school year there have been several burglaries reported to the Isla Vista Foot Patrol where the suspect entered through an unlocked door or an open window. Most recently, a burglary occurred in the 6600 block of Del Playa Drive late Saturday night October 13, 2018. The suspect entered an occupied residence through an unlocked side door.
For more than 25 years, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office has received federal grant funding through the Domestic Cannabis Eradication Suppression Program, administered by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). The purpose of the grant is to provide financial assistance to local law enforcement agencies to help eradicate illegal marijuana cultivation sites.
Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce E. Dudley announced today that an amended complaint has been filed against Dinara Arevalo, 24, a resident of Lompoc, California. Arevalo was charged on October 4, 2018, by a complaint alleging one count of felony evading arrest causing bodily injury, in violation of Vehicle Code § 2800.3, and a special allegation of infliction of great bodily injury resulting in a comatose state, in violation of Penal Code § 12022.7(b).
On October 15, 2018, Sheriff's detectives assigned to the Special Investigations Bureau served a search warrant on a suspected illegal marijuana cultivation site in the 3100 block of Avena Rd. in the Cebada Canyon area. The cultivation site did not possess the necessary license from the State of California to cultivate legally.
Announcing a new campaign aimed at boosting early brain development and language skills of all children birth through age 5 in Santa Barbara County. "Talking is Teaching: Talk, Read, Sing," is a community-wide effort with First 5 California and promotion from Too Small to Fail, a national, joint initiative of The Opportunity Institute and the Clinton Foundation.
The Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Office is requesting information regarding two separate incidents on school campuses in the North County. The Sheriff's Office is investigating the thefts of three stolen laptops at Buena Vista Elementary School in Vandenberg Village. The first laptop was reported stolen out of a classroom on October 9, 2018. On Sunday, October 14, 2018, two more laptops were discovered stolen. In both cases, the suspect(s) appears to have gained entry into the classrooms by prying open a window and removing the screen.
Santa Barbara County District Attorney Joyce E. Dudley announced today that Ali Mohammed, age 22, and Lavell White, age 25, were both sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole after being found guilty of the first-degree murder of Terence Brandon Richardson on December 30, 2014.
On Friday, October 12, 2018, members of the AB109 Compliance Response Team (CRT) conducted an investigation into the whereabouts of wanted Post-Sentencing Supervision offender, 35 year-old Erik Duran. Duran, a convicted felon and resident of Santa Maria, had a no bail warrant for his arrest due to absconding from the terms of his AB109 probation. In the afternoon, CRT members tracked Duran to a storage facility located on the 300 block of Roemer Way in Santa Maria.
Santa Barbara County and Isla Vista Parks and Recreation District (IVPRD) officials, staff, and community partners celebrated recent sidewalk and recreational improvements yesterday at Pardall Gardens Park in Isla Vista.
