Meet the Aquatics Staff

Jon Menzies, Aquatics Supervisor:  Jon is a lifelong swimmer and an avid surfer, diver, boater and ocean kayaker.  He became a Lifeguard with the Santa Barbara County Parks in 2005 to work summers while attending college.  After graduating from UCSB with a bachelor's degree in Communication he traveled to Australia's Gold Coast, earned his Bronze Medallion in lifesaving, and worked as a Professional Beach Lifeguard during Australia's busy summer season.  After returning from Australia, Jon furthered his education by becoming an Instructor Trainer for the American Red Cross, Santa Barbara County Chapter.  This has enabled Jon to certify the entire Santa Barbara County Parks staff in CPR and first aid as well as 5,000+ community members.  He continued to develop his knowledge of the emergency response by working as an Emergency Medical Technician on an ambulance in Santa Barbara County.  In 2007, Jon became the Santa Barbara County Aquatics Supervisor where he has worked to expand Santa Barbara County's Aquatic Programming and Lifeguard Operation.  More recently, Jon has led open water and pool lifeguard trainings for County staff, non-profits such as the Asociation De Bomberos Del Estado De Baja California, and the greater Santa Barbara community.  He will be lifeguarding in Brazil for Carnival 2015.

Al Fimlaid, Program Supervisor: Al began his lifeguard career as a Junior Lifeguard in Manhattan Beach at age 9 and moved to Huntington City Beach Junior Lifeguards when he was 12. He became a State Park Lifeguard at Huntington in 1977. From 1982 - 1986 he was the Junior Lifeguard Coordinator at Huntington State Beach. Al was promoted to a Permanent State Parks Lifeguard in 1987. Al's experience in a high rescue area such as Huntington Beach is the basis for his high expectations of the lifeguards working for him. In 2000 he moved to Santa Barbara and became to Aquatics Supervisor for El Capitan, Refugio and Gaviota State Beaches where he supervised the Refugio Junior Lifeguard Program and Gaviota Hoist Program.  Al retired from California State in 2012 and has continued to work with the County.  In addition, his competitive background in collegiate swimming and USLA Lifeguard Competition provides him with the skills to coach Hendry's Junior Lifeguards who are interested in competing at a higher level. This summer our Junior Lifeguards will greatly benefit from the knowledge and expertise Al brings to our program. Al also coaches youth basketball, softball and volleyball.

Tavis Boise, Lead Junior Lifeguard Instructor: Born and raised in Santa Barbara, Tavis Boise is a competitive surfer and active open ocean paddler. At the age of 16 he obtained his Firefighter 1 certificate and joined the Hollister Ranch Volunteer Fire Department. He served as the captain of the Dos Pueblos Surf Team for two consecutive years and is now helping judge the Scholastic Surf Series LA-SB contests. After graduation from Dos Pueblos Senior High in the summer of 2012, Tavis became a Santa Barbara County Lifeguard. He is an involved community member and has participated in multiple non-profits including The Friendship Paddle since 2007, and is currently serving as an advisor for The Keiki Paddle. Tavis has been attending school at Santa Barbara City College where he became an Emergency Medical Technician in 2012. He is currently an Economics major and has been lifeguarding for Santa Barbara County during the summer seasons. With his extensive ocean knowledge and competitive surfing and paddling experience, Tavis will continue to provide a diverse, yet structured environment, for the Hendry's Junior Lifeguard Program.

Kevin Cappon, Lead Junior Lifeguard Instructor: Kevin was raised on the coast of Gaviota and Santa Barbara and acquired a fascination and endearment for the ocean at a very young age by surfing and swimming in his front yard. This was intensified by his participation in the Junior Lifeguard Program at Refugio beach over nine summer seasons.  Kevin credits his athletic success to the morals and characteristics that were instilled in him by those Junior Lifeguard Instructors, one of which was Al Fimlaid.  As a Junior Lifeguard he won the distance swim at Nationals and the distance paddle at Regionals, both in the B division.  He was a member of the USA Junior National Water Polo Team.  More recently Kevin was named the Channel League Water Polo Player of the Year (2011), the SB Athletic Round Table Athlete of the Year (2011), All Academic Team (2009, 2010, 2011), the Channel League Champion in 100M Butterfly (2010, 2011) and won the NCAA Division 1 National Championship at USC (2011).  Currently Kevin is a Senior at UCSB and a leading contributor to the UCSB Men's Water Polo Team.  He is a Sociology major at UCSB and he recognizes the importance of the early years of child development.  As a role model for our Junior Lifeguards, he wants to stress all things positive, including self confidence, acute alertness, water safety, physical fitness and positive self-talk.  Kevin is excited to reach out to new Junior Lifeguards as well as build upon the bonds that he has made with his preceding JG's.
