Student Poll Worker Program

The Elections Division of Santa Barbara County proudly coordinates a Student Poll Worker Program for all General Elections. If students meet the requirements, they are assigned to work at a polling place and assist voters on Election Day. This provides a wonderful opportunity for students to participate in the voting process.


  1. Must be at least 16 years old by Election Day
  2. Must have a GPA of at least 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
  3. Must be a student of good standing attending a public or private secondary educational institution.
  4. Must be a United States citizen at the time of the election for which he/she is serving as a member of the precinct board OR must be lawfully admitted for permanent residence within the United States.
  5. Must complete a Voter Registration Card to pre-register to vote, if eligible. Registration will become active when the student turns 18 years of age.

  6. Must be available to work from 6:00 am until 9:00 pm on Election Day.
  7. Must be available to attend a mandatory two hour training class approximately two weeks prior to Election Day.
  8. Must have signed approval from the school and a parent or legal guardian.

Please be aware, that the Santa Barbara County Elections office continues to remain apprised of the changing situation with COVID-19.

The Santa Barbara County Registrar of Voters is committed to ensuring that voters can exercise their right to vote in a safe, secure and accessible manner during.

All actively registered voters will receive a ballot by mail this election. However, we know that there are circumstances where a voter will need to vote in-person.

Masks are required to be worn by in all indoor locations, per guidance from our local Public Health Officials. This applies to all persons at the polling place including voters and poll workers. Masks will be available to voters and poll workers without one.


Student Poll Workers are assigned as Clerks or Traffic Clerks. Below are brief descriptions of each position:


Clerks work one of the stations at the precinct table.

Paid $180 and required to attend a training class.

Traffic Clerk

Traffic Clerks work at Polling Places with two or more precincts or in our busier areas to help direct voters to the correct precinct table and assist voters who request Curbside Voting.

Paid $180 and required to attend a training class.

Students assigned to both Clerk and Traffic Clerk positions are required to attend a mandatory training class where all of the duties are explained. There are also guides and resources available that explain the job duties.
