I love being out and about in the Second District, visiting schools and non-profit organizations, attending events and community meetings, presenting certificates of recognition to deserving groups and individuals, and more. It keeps me in touch with my constituents and aware of what is happening in my district, and I meet so many wonderful community members. This page features some highlights of such activities.

These are just some of the heroes in our SB County criminal justice system (Judge Dandona, public defenders, district attorneys, probation officers and treatment providers) who work in our Collaborative Court system. Today we honored the graduates from the Clean and Sober Treatment Court, Dual Diagnosis and Mental Health Treatment Court, and Prop 36 Court. (Click here for Drug Court information.) Twenty-eight people graduated and turned their lives around!

St. Vincent's has had a tradition of caring in our community since 1858. Throughout its long history, the organization has evolved along with the changing needs of our community. Today, it remains the longest, continually-operating non-profit social service agency in Santa Barbara. I have always deeply valued their work and was excited to celebrate their 160th anniversary, as well as the 10th anniversary of the opening of 170 units of low-income housing on their campus.

I got a preview of the state-of-the art Cottage Children's Medical Center, including Acute Pediatrics, Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, which will soon be occupied by the most talented medical staff caring for some of our little ones. I am so proud to live in a place that is so supportive of our community hospital. (The motif on this wing is Stearns Wharf, hence the pelican.)

I was so impressed today to learn about the New Life K9s program and meet some of their beautiful dogs and partners. These dogs are trained in prisons and partnered with veterans and first responders with PTSD. Thanks to the efforts of our local Judges and Senator Hannah Beth Jackson, the local Veterans Treatment Court is able to partner with this organization.

I have been so appreciative of the work of Sister Margaret Keaveney and St. Vincent's, so it was an honor to present them with a Resolution at the Board of Supervisors. The Board proclaimed St. Vincent's as the longest continuing operating social service agency in Santa Barbara County (160 years!) and commended St. Vincent's and Sr. Margaret for their vital role in strengthening low-income families and seniors in Santa Barbara County.

How fun to celebrate the opening of the new pet wash at Tucker's Grove Park! Located near the dog off-leash area in the back section of the park, near Group Area 5, this pet wash is self-serve, accepts debit and credit cards, and includes high-quality pet shampoo/conditioning products and fresh water rinse, with a two-speed blow dryer. We've already been getting great positive feedback about the wash station, and revenues from it support County Parks' operations and maintenance - a win-win!

I was excited to be a part of today's ribbon-cutting for the beautiful Class I San Jose Creek Bike Path Bridge and celebration of the repaving of a section of the Obern Trail Bike Path. It was great to see so many neighbors come out and show their enthusiasm - some who braved the wet streets to cycle five miles from the bridge to the Obern Trail. What a fun day!

I can't wait to see it when it is complete, and really appreciate that despite the challenge of having reduced gallery space during the renovation, the museum is committed to staying open to the public, including continued public programs.

I had fun this morning helping kick off the launch of 'Solarize Santa Barbara County.' My husband and I participated in the CEC Solarize program about 7 years ago. It was a seamless process, our energy bills are lower now, and we'll have paid for the entire solar array sooner than expected. I spent an inspiring morning at the V ictims' Rights Awareness Fair sponsored by Santa Barbara Rape Crisis Center and the District Attorney's Office. The fair was held in honor of National Crime Victims' Rights Week and helped attendees gain a better understanding of the rights and resources available to individuals exposed to violence in our area. I spoke with staff and volunteers from public and non-profit groups, all helping to prevent and respond to violence and assist victims. I also met Star, a pony who comforts people in all sorts of situations!

What a great way to celebrate Arbor Day – planting a new tree with 2nd and 3rd grade students at Vieja Valley Elementary School! This young Brisbane Box tree should grow to about 35-50' tall, according to SB County Urban Forest Supervisor Udy Loza, providing beauty and shade for many future generations of Vieja Valley students and teachers. Happy Arbor Day, everyone!

I was honored to be a featured speaker at the Santa Barbara Public Library and League of Women Voters' co-sponsored free public event: "Can We Talk? - A Public Forum on Civil Discourse" in the Santa Barbara Public Library's Faulkner Gallery. The forum focused on civil and meaningful public dialogue. League of Women Voters representatives also spoke about the League's nationally acclaimed study on best practices in promoting "Civil Discourse" on public policy issues.

I enjoyed a lovely afternoon celebrating the amazing work of the Diana Basehart Foundation, a local organization that is entirely devoted to providing financial help to seniors, veterans, and fixed-income community members for critical veterinary care of their pets and service animals, thereby enabling people and their pets to stay together.

What fun! Today I met with Lukas, a Cub Scout and 5th grader at a local Second District elementary school. Lukas asked me how I became a community leader and what my job entails. In addition to talking with him, his mom, and his younger brother, I gave them a tour of the Board of Supervisors offices and showed them the Board hearing room. Moments like these are such a great part of my job as County Supervisor!

It was wonderful to be in a huge room full of local girls involved in sports, to see so many coaches and supporters of girls in sports, and to hear two inspiring local Olympians speak. ( Sami Hill, on the left of the photo, was a 2016 Olympian and goalie on the U.S. women's water polo team that took the gold, and Barbara Nwaba, on the right in the photo, was a 2016 U.S. Olympic Heptathlete and Pentathlete.) Women and girls in the U.S. have come a long way since the enactment of Title IX in 1972, prohibiting sex discrimination in education (including sports) -- but there is still much more to do!

This initiative, agreed to by the full Board of Supervisors, has a goal of reducing the number of mentally ill people in custody, which is something I have been dedicated to for many years. I was proud to join Supervisor Carbajal in co-hosting an important informational workshop on farmworker issues in the Santa Maria. The event provided an exchange of information, ideas, resources, and concerns of farmworkers, people who employ or work with them, and advocates. A speakers panel included the County Agricultural Commissioner, representatives from the District Attorney's office, a County Agricultural Advisory Committee member, officials from various State agencies including the Department of Industrial Relations and the Labor Commissioner, and a representative from the Santa Barbara County 211 Helpline Services.

Did you know that October 15th is recognized every year as national White Cane Safety Day? I was honored to participate in the Braille Institute's White Cane Safety Day Walk today, celebrating independence for the blind and visually impaired, and bringing awareness of the need for motorists to exercise special care for pedestrians with white canes. I look forward to presenting a Resolution on Tuesday at the Board of Supervisors hearing, proclaiming October 15, 2016 as White Cane Safety Day in Santa Barbara County.

As a Woman Heart Champion (class of 2005) it was particularly great to hear the emphasis on women, children, and risks during pregnancy. Thank you President and Mrs. Obama for your attention to this important issue and the emphasis on prevention and early and immediate treatment. Finally, a thank you to Santa Barbara County Public Health and CenCal health who are local leaders in education, outreach, innovative patient based programs, and the Stemi program, a collaboration of all emergency responders to insure immediate and state of the art response to a cardiovascular emergency!

After spending the first part of the day teamed up with Heal the Ocean and Looking Good Santa Barbara to clean up Santa Barbara's streets and local beaches from Summerland to Goleta, EF's 500 students headed back to their campus in downtown Santa Barbara for a presentation and awards ceremony. I was honored to be invited to speak at this event, and to thank them for their clean-up efforts today and applaud the school for its "Every Day is Earth Day" campaign.
