New Cuyama Transfer Station
The New Cuyama Transfer Station is located at 5073 Highway 166 in New Cuyama, California. The site is a 0.9 acre site within the community of New Cuyama that had previously been used as a road yard by the Transportation Division. This facility can process up to 99 cubic yards of trash during each day that it is open. Most materials dropped off at the New Cuyama Transfer Station are processed by MarBorg Industries at its Materials Recovery Facility in Santa Barbara. Workers sort through the loads to recover recyclables, such as cardboard, scrap metal, untreated wood, cans, bottles, and even mattresses. An estimated 50 percent of the waste generated at New Cuyama is recovered and recycled through these efforts.
In addition, this facility accepts old electronics and appliances, which are temporarily stored on-site and then transported to the County's South Coast Recycling & Transfer Station for consolidation and shipment to a certified recycler. Examples of electronics accepted include: desktop and laptop computers, monitors, printers, televisions, copiers, scanners, fax machines, VCRs, DVD/CD players, small appliances (e.g. vacuums, hair dryers, shavers), DVDs and CDs, audio and video cassettes, vinyl records, cell phones, MP3 players, and video game systems.
The Transfer Station is open on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays from 12:00 noon until 6:00 p.m. during Pacific Daylight Savings Time (the second weekend in March to the first weekend in November) and from 11:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. during Pacific Standard Time (from the first weekend in November to the first weekend in March). The facility is closed on New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day. October 7th Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection Event
Please mark your calendars for our upcoming Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Collection Event on Saturday, October 7, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the New Cuyama Transfer Station. The event is available to residents in the unincorporated area of Santa Barbara County (e.g. Cuyama, New Cuyama, Ventucopa).
Acceptable items include: automotive fluids (e.g. motor oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, spent fuels), batteries (small household types as well as automotive), household cleaners, fertilizer, fluorescent lights (both tubes and bulbs), medications (non-controlled substances only), needles and lancets (must be delivered in rigid, puncture-proof containers), paint, pesticides, propane tanks, smoke detectors (only those designated as "Ionization" or marked with an "I"), solvent and thinner, and household electronics like TVs, computers, printers, stereos, CD/DVD players, VCRs, fax machines, scanners, copiers, video game systems, cell phones, cameras, and microwaves (but no large appliances).
Residents can bring up to 15 gallons or 125 pounds of waste per trip. Please keep in mind that no trash or green waste will be accepted during the event. Also unacceptable are biological, explosive, and radioactive materials (with the exception of smoke detectors).
Qualifying businesses are also allowed to drop off waste but must call ahead to schedule an appointment.
