The mission of the Network for a Healthy California is to create innovative partnerships that promote healthy eating and physical activity among lower -income community members.

 

Communities of Excellence (CX3)

The focus of the Communities of Excellence (CX3) project is to address obesity prevention by improving the nutrition and physical activity environments in three low-income neighborhoods in Santa Barbara County, including Isla Vista and the Newlove and Northwest areas of Santa Maria.  Staff work to research the local food and activity environments, share the findings with community members, and advance the priorities for improvements selected by the local community.  This can include issues such as access and availability of healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables, walkability, and safe access to areas for physical activities.

South Santa Barbara County:     

The Network focus in southern Santa Barbara County is on promoting the availability of healthy foods and beverages in school settings.  Staff work with School Districts to promote healthy policies and practices.  Staff also assist with nutrition education training and resouirces in eligible schools.

North Santa Barbara County: 

The Network focus in northern Santa Barbara County is on increasing healthy food offerings and nutrition education in local schools and various human service organizations.  Staff support the Santa Maria-Bonita School district with implementation of their wellness policies, and provide nutrition education resources and training to several agencies.

County-Wide/Regional:

Partners for Fit Youth is a county-wide coalition of school and agency representatives committed to improving the health of youth and their families through outreach, education, intervention, and environmental change.  Preventing childhood obesity and related chronic disease is a key focus of the group.  Meetings are held monthly at Lake Cachuma Recreation Center and new partners are welcome.  For more information, call the Partners for Fit Youth Coordinator at 963-8566 ext. 221 or 226.
