Pandemic Flu
| There are
NO human or animal cases
of highly pathogenic (H5N1) avian influenza in the U.S. |
The threat of highly pathogenic avian influenza is a global concern.
Experts expect this avian influenza or "bird flu" to reach the United
States (or Santa Barbara) in the coming months. It will occur in wild
birds or domestic poultry. When this happens, this will not mean
that there is an influenza pandemic in humans. This will mean, however,
that the avian (bird) flu is present in the U.S. or Santa Barbara in
the nation's wild birds, with the potential to be seen in the domestic
poultry. Those people who directly handle birds infected with the
H5N1 virus are at the greatest risk for getting the disease.
This site provides general information and answers to frequently
asked questions on pandemic and avian influenzas for general and
specific audiences; information for healthcare providers; guidance
on what is being done in Santa Barbara County; a link to the local,
state, and federal Pandemic Influenza Response Plans; and other
links and resources.
