General Classes

Adults working on projectAs part of Santa Barbara County Human Resources, the Employees’ University works in collaboration with our customers to develop, support and retain an ethical, diverse and high-performing workforce dedicated to providing excellent service to the community.  The Employees’ University offers a variety of learning opportunities in north and south county.  All employees, from line staff to executives, can take advantage of online, half-day, full-day, and multi-day sessions that help to build competencies and hone skills in alignment with the County's core values of customer-focus, accountability, and efficiency (ACE).  Topics include computer skills, workplace communication, conflict resolution, presentation skills, strategic and operational leadership, administrative office skills and more.  In 1998, the Employees' University established a partnership with Santa Barbara City College.  Through this partnership employees are able to earn academic credit for many EU classes.

Our highly successful Foundations of Operational Leadership (for rising leaders) and Foundations of Strategic Leadership (for supervisors, managers, and executives) have become recognized as the standard for leadership training in the region.  Participants learn strategies to inspire and motivate staff while effectively adapting to change,  enabling them to reach greater heights in quality public service.

Supervisor and Manager Development

The County is committed to ensure that supervisory and management employees have the tools they need to do their jobs effectively and successfully. The goal is for supervisors and managers, the team members who report to them, and those they report to, to be positioned to work together in a positive and collaborative environment.  To that end, the County has implemented a Supervisor and Manager Selection and Development Program with recommended training appropriate to the individual’s position and experience.  Training is available through a variety of sources including live, instructor led classes at the Employees’ University, desktop delivery and online through EU E-Learning.

Harassment Training Tip Sheet

Customized Training  (Specialized training for County departments and external agencies)

Customized training is a method  that  provides training tailored to the specific needs of departments or employees, when standard Employees' University classes are not the answer.  If your department wants a group of employees  to take the same EU class, at the same time, it can be arranged, just-in-time, to fit your schedule.

Classes can be held at a location of your choice or at the EU  training  center  and  classes  can  be  customized to fit your  unique business  objectives.  The EU can conduct  a single class or a series of classes just for your department.

A minimum of 12 participants is required and discounts apply for large groups.

Computer Classes

 Computer Room

In an effort to streamline delivery, lower costs and make technical training available to all employees, regardless of geographic location in the county the Employees’ University is embarking on a 6 - 9 month test phase of “online delivery only” for all technical training.  As a result you will not see any Excel, Word or PowerPoint courses on our calendar.  Instead, employees will be able to purchase a license for online access to any training previously offered live in our computer lab.

Online Technical Training: All Access Pass (SS) - CT-SS114 (all employees)

You may register for the course above at any time; by completing the normal EU registration form, getting the proper approval in your department and forwarding the form to the EU.  This training is Independent Study, these are not instructor lead classes.

For the price of one full day course, you will have access to an entire suite of courses on all technical topics (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Project Management, Crystal Reports, etc.) as well as an entire library of courses on business topics (time management, conflict resolution, business etiquette, communication skills, etc.)  The license is an unlimited, EU E-learning “All Access Pass”, good for one year and can be used on any computer* with internet access.

*If you do not have access to a computer or a quiet location to do online training, you may register to attend one of our “open learning labs” once you have your All Access Pass.
