Medi-Cal
Medi-Cal is California's version of the federal Medicaid health coverage program. Medi-Cal plays an essential role in California's health care system by ensuring that children and adults with limited income and resources can receive the medical services they need, at little or no cost to them.
Eligibility has been expanded.
You might qualify under current rules, even if you didn't qualify before 2014 or 2016:
- Medi-Cal coverage is now available to citizens and legal residents earning up to 138% of the Federal Poverty Level, including childless adults.
- Foster youth are now eligible for coverage until age 26, instead of age 18 or 21. See this flyer for more information.
- Children under age 19 are eligible for full-scope Medi-Cal regardless of immigration status, as long as the household meets the income standards. Learn more here .
- Special programs remain available to help pregnant women, the terminally ill, those needing long-term care, and the aged, blind, and disabled.
How can I apply?
You can submit an application online ; visit one of our three offices (shown below); or call our toll-free automated phone number (1-866-404-4007). We determine eligibility based on the information you provide on your Medi-Cal application and any required verifications. If we determine that your household is not eligible, then we can help you pursue other options, such as applying for affordable insurance from Covered California.
