- A total of 371 students (92% of all the students who completed
their 6-month follow-up period) did not have a criminal violation
during the follow-up period.
- All schools directly involved with the truancy program have
had a decrease in the percentages of students with unexcused absence.
- An increase in academic performance was reported for students.
- By the end of 2000, over 2000 Santa Maria area minors had received
intervention services.
As the chart below illustrates, the District Attorney’s Truancy
Program has achieved remarkable results in improving student attendance.
In Santa Barbara alone 2,293 students were required to attend the
Assistant Principal meetings (AP). Since the inception of the program
there has been a 61% reduction in the number of students required
to attend this step. Similar numbers and results occurred in the
Santa Maria School District. The number of students required to
attend an after-school meeting decreased by 55% and while 1,219
students were required to attend a Truancy Mediation Team Meeting,
this was less than 50% of those who attended the ASM’s.
Overall the program has produced a dramatic increase in both the
junior high school and high school student attendance figures and
more importantly provided important counseling, intervention and
referral services to thousands of our county’s students
