Definition of Stalking
Penal Code 646.9 defines a stalker as "any person who willfully,
maliciously and repeatedly follows or harasses another person and
who makes a credible threat with the intent to place that person
in reasonable fear for his or her safety, or the safety of his or
her immediate family."
Characteristics of a Stalker
- Does not accept victim's decision that relationship is over
- Manipulative
- Unable to cope with rejection
- Falls "instantly" in love
- Difficulty distinguishing between fantasy and reality
- Dependent on others for sense of "self"
- Blames his / her situation on others
Common Behaviors of a Stalker
- Persistent in following the victim
- Multiple violations of a restraining order
- Taking mail from the victim's mailbox
- Showing up at the victim's home or work
- Sending the victim letters, notes, e-mails and gifts that are
threatening to the victim, either by themselves or when viewed
with other conduct of the perpetrator
