Many outstanding organizations
help shape Santa Barbara County, particularly those who advocate
for women in need. To recognize, honor and celebrate the achievements
of these organizations, the Santa Barbara County Commission
for women established the Commission for Women Service Awards,
which is celebrated in March, during Women’s History
Month. The recipients demonstrate their commitment and service
to the Santa Barbara Community 365 days of the year and the
Commission takes pride in shining the spotlight on them this
year on March 7th in the Board of Supervisors Hearing Room,
at 11:00 am. There will be one organization honored from each
of the five Supervisorial districts. A celebratory luncheon
will follow and the public is invited to attend.
March is National Women's History Month a time
to celebrate contributions Women make every day through out
the World!
Thanks to the National Women's History Project
(NWHP) there is a National Women's History Month. In 1980,
they realized that women's contributions to history, culture,
and society were not given adequate and appropriate recognition
in textbooks in our schools. Young girls had no historical
role models, creating the perception that women must not have
done anything important. Knowing this was not true, NWHP convinced
Congress and the White House of the need for a national celebration
and recognition of women's role in history, resulting in the
designation of the week of March 8th (International Women's
Day) as National Women's History Week. In 1987, the campaign
was waged successfully to declare the entire month of March
as national Women's History Month.
