UCR Study Finds Population Size Affects Fitness of Self-incompatible Invasive Plants 01/08/07

University of California, Riverside genetics Professor Norman Ellstrand led a team of researchers whose findings suggest that harnessing the sexual requirements of some plants can help control the establishment of invasive species.
Using the California wild radish as their model, Ellstrand and graduate student Caroline Ridley at the UCR Department of Botany and Plant Sciences co-authored the research study titled Population Size and Relatedness Affect Fitness of Self-incompatible Invasive Plants, published in the Dec. 29 edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.  The news release is available at http://www.newsroom.ucr.edu/cgi-bin/display.cgi?id=1486.  The research study is available at http://www.pnas.org/cgi/reprint/0607306104v1.

New Plantwise Brochure and Poster 5/14/07

The Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center at the University of Texas at Austin has just put the finishing touches to an invasive species outreach brochure and poster (see links below) that educates gardeners and homeowners about best management practices to prevent harmful invasive plants from invading parklands and natural areas. The material was developed in cooperation with the National Park Service, The Garden Club of America, the National Invasive Species Council and many others. The brochure is crafted to send a positive message about managing invasive plants and is generic enough to be distributed widely. Plus, it is free for the asking to anyone who wants to help distribute it. To request copies, email Lynda Brick (lbrick@wildflower.org) with your address and quantity requested. They have about 3,000 brochures on hand and can order more if necessary.

You can find the PDF files for the brochure & poster mentioned at http://wildflower.utexas.edu/plantwise/plantwise_assets/PW_Brochure.pdf and   http://wildflower.utexas.edu/plantwise/plantwise_assets/PW_Poster.pdf

New Online Identification Key to Aquarium and Pond Plants of the World 6/1/07

Aquarium plants are often seen in commercial shipments to the United States and California.  The careless disposal of aquarium plants is believed to be responsible for their escape into natural habitat.  APHIS USDA in association with the CDFA and North Carolina State University has developed an online resource to assist quarantine inspectors and local land managers to correctly identify aquarium and pond plants of the world.  The key is available at http://www.lucidcentral.org/keys/aquariumplants2/key/Aquarium_&_Pond_Plants/Media/Html/Other/entry.html

CNGA & Cal-Pac SRM Meeting Review 6/1/07

The 2007 meeting of the California Native Grass Association and California Pacific Society for Rangeland Management met recently in Santa Barbara.  I attended the technical sessions and field trips on rangeland assessment at Vandenberg Air Force Base and Hollister Ranch.  The sessions and field trips were excellent.  One of the many items I came away with that I can share is a link to http://behave.net/.  I learned about this from an interesting session on teaching cattle to eat invasive weeds.
